In other far-out news, DARPA is asking for bids on innovative ideas of turning insects into cyborgs.

The idea is to insert micro-systems at the pupa stage, when the insects can integrate them into their body, so they can be remotely controlled later.

During the pupa stage insects are able to repair themselves quite easily, as they are already going through large changes to their bodies. Electronics inserted at this stage would then become part of the body. If you're interested in taking up the challenge, you must be able to have an insect within 5m of a target that is 100m away. Also, you must, "be able to transmit data from relevant sensors, yielding information about the local environment. These sensors can include gas sensors, microphones, video, etc."

There's still a good bit of skepticism in the science community. But, if the idea works out, terrorists will be investing in lots of bug spray.
