Results of the 9th Annual Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition

ImageHere’s the final standings for the 9th Autonomous Underwater Vehicle competition:

  1. University of Florida
  2. Duke University
  3. Ecole de technologie superieure
  4. University of Rhode Island
  5. University of Texas at Dallas
  6. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  7. Cornell University
  8. University of Central Florida
  9. North Carolina State University (this is my team!)
  10. Southern Polytechnic State University
  11. University of Toronto
  12. Virginia Tech
  13. University of Ottawa
  14. University of Victoria
  15. Amador Valley High School
  16. Georgia Tech
  17. San Diego City College
  18. University of Colorado Denver
  19. University of Southern California
  20. Kyushu Institute of Technology
  21. Indian Underwater Robotics Society
The top two teams, UF and Duke were both competing with an old vehicle. Duke has used the same vehicle for a number of years and basically has a pretty easy job of it. The same goes for Cornel, MIT, and others. UF won first place last year and has a really nice vehicle.

My team, NCSU, took 9th place. We didn’t have quite enough man-power on the software side of things and has some system malfunctions the night before our second qualifier. Our vehicle is pictured up at the top.

All the teams were required to submit a jornal paper for evaluation. You can find links to all the team papers here. They’re easy to read and informative.

You can find more media coverage of the event here, here, here, and here.

    Hi,

I am starting a Robotic club for Jr. and Sr. high school kind in the Triangle. I have purchase a couple of Lego Mindstom kits to introduce to the world of robotics!

I was wondering if you are aware of any competition taking place in in the early Summer of 2009? I would be great if it was local (North Carolina Triange region). I have found a few that take place in other states during spring. However, I think that will be too soon for the group. I will begin the club in January 2009.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Thanks!
